Tortilis Tented Camp
At
Torilis Camp, the only thing you have to do is
relax. On arrival
at this award- winning eco - tourism lodge in Amboseli your senses are
sharpened by the smells of the bush, the calls of the wildlife and the
sheer open space that surrounds you.
Torilis
Camp is named after the Torilis Acacia (the Umbrella Thorn Tree),
a charming rustic tented lodge built into the side of a hill, facing the
foothills of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimajaro. As you walk into camp
your first view across the tree - studded plains towards the snow - capped
mountain stops you in your tracks.
Accommodation:
The camp nestles in abundant trees and shrubs, bustling with bird life.
Your room is an airy tent on a raised wooden platform, sheltered by a
Makuti (thatched) roof. You enter from your private stone verandah with
a comfortable Lamu style day bed (perfect for afternoon siestas) into
the main tent. The light beige canvas, striking furnishings and local
artifacts give each tent a stylish and relaxing charm. The double or twin
beds are generous and comfortable. From the dressing area a door leads
into the en- suite bath- room with a wonderful high-pressure shower, hot
spring - fed water and a flush toilet.
Children are
welcome at Tortilis. Early mealtimes and a baby - listening service are
available and during the day our experienced guides know how to make a
bush walk or game drive 'come alive' for young gests. In the heat of the
day parents can relax by the swimming pool whilst kids enjoy a refreshing
dip, with iced - drinks available from the poolside bar.Amboseli is a
place of contrasts: during the hot dry season, mirages appear on the dusty
horizon; year around the Elephant herds follow their ancient rituals,
migrating daily from the Tortilis forests to the swamps. In the green
season water birds: Flamingos, Pelican. Egyptian Geese flock to the Park
and the arid plains turn emerald green overnight. In Amboseli the traditional
cultural heritage is strong: the Maasai communities adhere to an age -
old lifestyle, herding and trading cattle; a life which they will share
with you in their Manyatta (village), a circle of dung & mud huts
protected by a barrier of thorns against the predators.
At
Tortilis Camp our Maasai Guides lead walks into the bush, passing on knowledge
of traditional medical and uses of local flora and Maasai folklore. A
walk in the bush is part of the magic of a safari: follow the spoor of
the animals passing camp the night before, smelling the crushed leaves
where animals have fed, listening to the bird calls and watching them
overhead, this way you touch and feel the wild.Games drives became addictive:
following the Elephant herds, watching the plains game and their predators
form the safety of open - sided Land Rovers driven by our Driver Guides.
Bush breakfasts, hilltop sundowners or just a drink under a tree out on
the plains make lasting memories.
